The drape just begs to be worked up into a soft slouchy hat. Thishat is a simple beret with 2 design elements worked in to make it unique:the purl surrounded mesh band which I call my river pattern and use inmany of my designs and a little seed stitch tab with buttons worn at the lefttemple.1 100 gram skein of Cascade Eco Duo yarn. Pictured hat is color #1706. Sizes 8 and10 16” circular needles and size 10 double points,or size required to obtain gauge.Marker, 2 half-inch buttons.Materials:Gauge:8 stitches to 2”BE SURE TO CHECK GAUGE!!River Pattern:Row 1: PurlRow 2: KnitRow 3: *K2tog, YO, repeat from * aroundRow 4: KnitRow 5: PurlDIRECTIONSUsing smaller needles, cast on 84 sts. Place marker and join in the round being careful not to twiststitches. Work in K2, P2 ribbing for 10 rounds. Next row – *K2, YO, repeat from * around to markerending with a YO (126 sts). Change to larger needles. Next row – *K2, K into back of YO, repeat from *around. Work even on the 126 sts in stockinette (knit every round) until hat measures 4-1/2” from caston edge. Work 5 rows of River Pattern. Continue in stockinette until hat measures 6-1/2” from cast onedge. Decrease for the crown as follows:NOTE:The decreases are done on EVERY row, not every other row as in most hats.Row 1: *K12, K2tog, repeat from * around, 117 stsRow 2: *K11, K2tog, repeat from * around, 108 stsRow 3: *K10, K2tog, repeat from * around, 99 stsRow 4: *K9, K2tog, repeat from * around, 90 stsRow 5: *K8, K2tog, repeat from * around, 81 stsRow 6: *K7, K2tog, repeat from * around, 72 stsRow 7: *K6, K2tog, repeat from * around, 63 stsChange to double point needlesRow 8: *K5, K2tog, repeat from * around, 54 stsRow 9: *K4, K2tog, repeat from * around, 45 stsRow 10: *K3, K2tog, repeat from * around, 36 stsRow 11: *K2, K2tog, repeat from * around, 27 stsRow 12: *K1, K2tog, repeat from * around, 18 stsRow 13: *K2tog, repeat from * around, 9 stsRow 14: K2tog 4X, K1, 5 stsPut all 5 sts onto a single needle and work I-cord by pushing sts to right end of needle after each rowwithout turning and pulling the yarn across the back of the sts to knit the 5 sts. Work 6 rows in this man-ner. To finish off I-Cord K2tog, K3tog, pass 1stst over 2ndand tie off.Make Tab:Holding hat with cast-on edge facing up, find the rib that is opposite the join, then move twosets of ribs to the left. Using smaller needles, pick up and knit 9 sts between the knit and purl sts of thisrib. Work in seed st (*K1, P1, repeat from * ending K1 on each row) until tab is 2”. Next right side row,K1, P1, K1, slip one knitwise, K2tog and pass slipped st over, K1, P1, K1. Work wrong side row evenmaintaining seed st. Next right side row, K1, P1, slip one knitwise, K2tog and pass slipped st over, P1,K1. Work wrong side row even maintaining seed st. Next right side row, K1, slip one knitwise, K2togand passed slipped st over, K1. Work wrong side row even maintaining seed st.
